Empowering Access Through Support and Communication

CAN provides auxiliary support services to statewide agencies who serve deaf or hard-of-hearing elderly (who require American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation by native users of ASL) and ReafBlind and Hard of Hearing blind, and Deaf and Hard of Hearing persons with diminished visual acuity regardless of race or gender so that they can be provided opportunities to succeed in areas of employment, education, housing, economics, and self-determination.

Support Service Provider (SSP)

SSPs are fluent in American Sign Language (ASL) and trained to provide tactile or visual communication, transportation and assistance in maintaining independence.

Consumer Support Providers (CSP)

CSPs provide peer-to-peer communication, offering companionship, scheduling transportation to medical appointments, and food shopping for elderly Deaf consumers.

Communication Facilitator(CF)

This assistance is available at virtual or onsite meetings or workshops. Trained facilitators work between hearing-sight callers and DeafBlind callers on videophones his is different from interpreters who deliver voice communication in American Sign Language (ASL).

DeafBlind Consumer Support Group

This DeafBind support group meets monthly bringing the community together to learn about a wide range of topics related to DeafRling as well as provide a chance to socialize, and engage in the community.

Peer Mentoring Program (PM)

Every two weeks this program provides meaningful opportunities for communicatively accessible information and interaction that helps stablilize and enhance ReafBlind persons mental health and well beng by providing health screenings, Deaf community updates, sharing of technology developments, local activities and other activities identified by the participants.

The Bureau of Education and Services for the Blind (BESB) offers vital programs and resources to help legally blind or visually impaired residents of Connecticut live, learn, and work independently. Support for Aging and Caregiving in Connecticut

The North Central Area Agency on Aging (NCAAA) connects older adults, caregivers, and veterans in north central Connecticut with essential services—from Medicare counseling to caregiver support—helping them stay independent and informed.

Advocating for Disability Rights in Connecticut

Disability Rights Connecticut (DRCT) is the state’s designated Protection and Advocacy System, dedicated to advancing the civil and human rights of individuals with disabilities. Through legal advocacy, education, and systemic reform, DRCT works to ensure equal participation in community life for all Connecticut residents with disabilities.
